Traveling along the Echo Trail--along granite cliff roadways that hug the edge of wilderness landscapes below you -- you'll experience an awakening to your natural surroundings and an enlightening of your spirit.  The noise, the crowds are left behind, and traffic seems nonexistent.  Your vacation has already begun  Just twenty miles north of Ely a secluded private drive leads you further into the Superior National Forest to Lodge of Whispering Pines on Big Lake.

Poised among tall pine, picturesque birch, spruce, balsam, and aspen, you realize you are encircled by the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness and are now the guests of the deer, moose, black bear, timber wolves, loons, and other wild creatures that inhabit northern Minnesota's truly natural park.

In the early 90's Dan and Sue Churchill left Chicago for a northern Minnesota vacation experience...they're still here.

Log cabins honed from native timbers were constructed in the early twenties and remain neatly knit into the pine-studded shoreline of Big Lake.  Throughout the past few decades, seven additional housekeeping cabins have been built --- some along the shoreline --- others set back into the forest.  Creature comforts have been added without altering the ambiance of the early decor --- indoor plumbing, complete kitchens, and full baths tend to make you forget the unchanged surrounding wilderness.

Moose, deer and other wild animals inhabit the trails and forests where earlier innkeepers corralled a stable of horses for their guests' riding pleasure. Unique to Big Lake, and its relationship to the wilderness, motorized boats and canoes are both allowed and available for our guests to use.

Whispering Pines is our home as well as our business; visitors here are treated as guests of our family--which they are.

Privacy and comfort complement the natural beauty of the cabins. Whether you choose to be tucked away in the trees or nearer the natural sand swimming beach and playground, with the exception of towels, everything is included -- modern kitchen appliances, barbecue grills, picnic tables, and more. Each cabin is unique in amenities. Some feature decks in private wooded areas, screen porches, private docks, log construction, or fireplaces. Cabins range from one to three bedrooms (sleeping 3-10 people). All have full kitchens and baths, Charcoal Grills, Picnic tables, outdoor fire rings. and Minnesota's truly natural park.

Moonlight nature hikes, northern lights, loons calling in the dark, fireside stories, incredible sunrises and sunsets are all on the agenda.

A large pine-timbered lodge was constructed in the early thirties and renovated throughout the years for our guests' pleasure.  A massive stone fireplace serves as the focal point of the great room.

Guests stay here for relaxation and recreation, but occasionally some find it necessary to mix a little business with pleasure.  For them, the lodge becomes a natural setting for conferences, meetings, and receptions. A gift shop and store brim with unique hand-made crafts and convenient grocery items.  If special items will be required for your stay, please request them when you make reservations.

Little things make the difference.  After unloading, cars are removed to a central parking area where they become virtually invisible to all of the guests.

Fishing is exceptional -- from a motorized boat on Big Lake or a canoe on any of the connecting Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness lakes.  Big Lake (more than 2000 acres) has numerous large islands and secluded bays, and except for one other remote resort and four private cabins, the shoreline has been virtually undeveloped.  Rated one of the top walleye fishing lakes in the state, northern pike, smallmouth bass, perch, and other panfish can be found in abundance as well.  Guides can be arranged, and complete or partial outfitting for canoe trips into the BWCA is available.   Whispering Pines is the closet resort to Hegman Lake where centuries-old pictographs can be viewed and photographed.  Our naturalist can prepare your nature treks and wilderness excursions.

Catch and release is encouraged so future little shavers like this one will always have the opportunity to experience the thrills of fishing and find new friendships with nature.

If you are searching for a more back-to-nature experience than staying in a wilderness cabin, consider our lakeside sites (complete with picnic tables and fireplaces) for tents and tent campers.  They include water, electricity, fire ring, use of swimming beach, sauna, rest rooms, bathing facilities, and boat launch -- and spectacular views.

Boats, motors, canoes, Kayaks and pontoon boats along with fishing gear, tackle, bait, and fishing licenses are available for rent and sale at the lodge.

And if you wish to venture further into the wild, don't hesitate to ask about our complete and partial outfitting services into the BWCA.

No matter why you join us -- for the fishing, the wildlife, the family life, or just the fun -- you'll leave here with an appreciation for nature and the environment in which we all share.  Along with our friends in the forest, we invite you to be our guests and have a wonderful time at Lodge of Whispering Pines.
